Cairo Morning Briefing · Sat, 03 Oct 2026 22:19:26 GMT · 3:19

Maya: Good morning, Cairo, and happy Saturday. It's October third, twenty twenty-six, and this is your Cairo Morning Briefing.
Devon: I'm Devon.
Maya: And I'm Maya. Coming up: your week-ahead weather, tonight's sky, what's on around the city, and three stories you need to know.
Devon: Let's start with the weather — and it's a classic Cairo October: hot days, mild nights, not a drop of rain.
Maya: Sunday: a high of thirty degrees, a low of eighteen, zero chance of rain. Monday: thirty and nineteen, dry. Tuesday: twenty-nine degrees. Wednesday: thirty. Thursday: thirty-one. Friday: thirty-two — the hottest day of the week. Next Saturday: thirty-one.
Devon: Lows hold steady around eighteen to twenty all week. So: hot afternoons, pleasant evenings, and completely dry.
Maya: Now the night skies. Sunset tonight is at six thirty-seven, and it's properly dark by seven fifty-six.
Devon: The moon is in its last quarter, about forty-five percent lit, and it doesn't rise until twelve oh-seven tonight. So the evening sky is moonless — nice and dark if you get away from the city lights.
Maya: Saturn is up in the southeast after dark, about forty-two degrees above the horizon — high and easy to spot. No space station passes tonight.
Devon: What's on in Cairo? The big one: legendary composer Omar Khairat plays two concerts at the Cairo Opera House Main Hall — tomorrow, Sunday October fourth, and Monday the fifth, both at eight PM. Tickets run from one thousand seven hundred fifty to three thousand pounds.
Maya: Also ahead: the Cairo International Art District returns for its sixth edition, "Alive Archive," from October eleventh to November eighth — contemporary exhibitions and installations spread across The Factory, Kodak Passage, and Access Art Space in Downtown Cairo.
Devon: And on Thursday, October eighth: comedian Omar Kint presents his first one-hour stand-up special at ROOM Art Space in Garden City, at eight PM.
Maya: Now the news. First: football. Egypt hosts South Africa in an international friendly tomorrow night at the Cairo International Stadium — kickoff at nine PM Cairo time.
Devon: The Pharaohs are coming off an emphatic five-nil win over South Sudan in Juba on Tuesday, which put them top of their twenty twenty-seven Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group. South Africa's coach Pitso Mosimane says he'll rotate heavily to test young players. One question mark: whether Mohamed Salah features at all — reports cast doubt on his participation.
Maya: Second: diplomacy. Egypt has declared a counsellor at the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo persona non grata, giving the diplomat forty-eight hours to leave the country.
Devon: It's a tit-for-tat move: Ethiopia ordered an Egyptian diplomat out and shut its embassy in Eritrea earlier in the week. The African Union Commission has now urged Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to exercise maximum restraint and settle their differences through dialogue.
Maya: Third: press freedom. Dozens of journalists held a picket in Cairo today, demanding the release of six colleagues — the entire team of the Maksdash platform, which authorities describe as unlicensed. The demonstrators called it escalating pressure on independent media.
Devon: That's your briefing for this Saturday, Cairo. Hot and dry, Saturn high in the southeast, and a big night of football tomorrow.
Maya: We'll be back tomorrow morning at five with a fresh briefing. Have a great day.
